Salvador

by Jenny Bennett

Take the remarkable songwriting ability of someone like Steven Curtis Chapman, mix in a little bluesy-rock from a John Mayer type; then throw back to the classic rock of Santana, and maybe toss in a little James Taylor and some Maroon Five to boot…and you’ve got a recipe for Salvador’s latest offering Aware.

The album is chock full of tunes that are both worshipful and reverent in tone and able to set your feet to dancing. Fly Again addresses a common experience of yearning for a time when faith was strong, but with a little Santana-like flare, helps you feel like flying again (or dancing, at the very least). Undeniable reminds us what we all know as believers – we are undeserving of this great love – but we experience it nonetheless. And one way you could experience the joy of that love is to dance to this song!

Frontman Nic Gonzales’ wife Jaci Velasquez’ vocals shine on Everybody Needs You which boldly declares God’s omnipotence. Jaci takes a solo verse as well as harmonies and background vocals throughout the track.

With a truly unique brand of Latin flavor and expertly arranged, Lelvame leaves me yearning for knowledge of the language to be able to understand the lyrics to one of the most beautiful songs on the album.

The worshipful You Rescue Me is marked by a soft jazz electric guitar line and a gentle rhythm that sounds as though it fell right onto the page in perfect order, only to float back up into the mouth of the songwriter and into the listener's ears. What Would it Be Like asks a simple but important question: what would it be like if we learned to love each other? Along with title track Aware, the album offers a strong dose of praise & worship without compromising the rock/funk element.

Salvador has once again proven themselves as a group that can bring their unique brand to the table and offer something no one else does in Christian music.
