April 15 is generally circled on everyone's calendar as the dreaded day federal income taxes are due, but Gaither Vocal Band fans have something to look forward to this year as the GVB’s new release, Lovin’ Life, will hit store shelves that day. Vocal band members Guy Penrod, Marshall Hall, Wes Hampton and Bill Gaither have again delivered a collection of songs that are well-written and beautifully performed. The 13-song disc kicks off with a fresh take on the Imperials' classic I’m Forgiven.
Instead of recording vocals in Nashville, the foursome opted to record at Gaither’s studio in Alexandria, Indiana, and there’s a relaxed, yet confident feel to the performances – almost as if they guys were sitting right in front of you. This is especially evident on Jesus and John Wayne, an engaging tune that lets Penrod tap into his country roots.
Build an Ark is a delicious little change of pace that almost sounds like Bill Gaither meets Jimmy Buffett as the Southern gospel lyric is buoyed by tropical-flavored production. Go Ask, penned by Bill and Gloria Gaither, is a poignant ballad that features the GVB’s signature harmonies on the chorus, but it’s Gaither’s lead vocal on the verses that gives the song it’s heart and conviction. There’s just something so comforting in his warm, weathered voice that brings the lyric to life and creates a special moment on the record.
Each member of the GVB gets a chance to shine on Lovin' Life. Hall does an admirable job on Home of Your Dreams and the beautiful ballad When I Cry, which he co-wrote with Benji Gaither. Hampton demonstrates his way with a lyric on There's Always Room at the Table and The Diff’rence Is In Me. Among the other highlights is Penrod’s thoughtful vocal on Prisoner of Hope, a tribute to the power of optimism, faith and trust in the Lord.
We’ve all heard that old cliché about the only two things that are certain in life are death and taxes. The reliability of the Gaither Vocal Band should be factored into that equation. After all, this talented foursome can always be counted on to deliver great music and Lovin’ Life once again finds the Gaither Vocal Band brilliantly hitting the mark.
