Gospel Angels Down in New Orleans
By Tatiana Holifield, Affiliate Marketing Coordinator, Gospel Music Channel
On the eve of the 2008 National Cable Show, Gospel Music Channel partnered with Cox New Orleans, Feed the Children, CableCares and Lincoln Mercury to deliver three tractor trailers loaded with food, personal care products, school supplies and musical instruments to families and children still in recovery stages from Hurricane Katrina.
“With the cable industry returning to New Orleans for the first time since Hurricane Katrina, we felt that it was our responsibility to lend a hand to the recovery efforts," said Charles Humbard, founder and president of Gospel Music Channel. "The industry’s CableCares project is a meaningful initiative and we are proud to be a part of it. I would like to recognize Lincoln, as well as Cox New Orleans and Feed the Children for their helping us make our project a reality.”
Two tractor trailers arrived at Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17 to deliver the items to children and families in need. More than 800 Ninth Ward families in all received this blessing. A third truck delivered school supplies to 750 children at Murray Henderson and Sylvanie Williams elementary schools in the Ninth Ward of the Recovery School District. While en route to the schools, the truck also made a stop at Full Gospel Baptist Church.
Gospel Angels, Gospel Music Channel's outreach program, were also hard at work fulfilling its mission to bring inspiration and hope through Gospel music to children in need by delivering musical instruments to eight schools in the Recovery School District.
The deliveries were components of Gospel Music Channel’s multi-faceted New Orleans-based initiative during The National Cable Show. The network also used its booth space at the convention center to showcase local New Orleans painters and visual artists whose businesses were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Gospel Music Channel purchased and commissioned artwork from the local painters and artists as a donation to various cable providers.
In addition, Gospel Music Channel also created “the quintessential New Orleans experience” on Monday, May 19 by inviting 100 special guests to a rare intimate performance starring The Blind Boys of Alabama and featuring New Orleans’ own Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
